BTT

Do you get on a roll when you read, so that one book leads to the next, which leads to the next, and so on and so on?

I don’t so much mean something like reading a series from beginning to end, but, say, a string of books that all take place in Paris. Or that have anthropologists as the main character. Or were written in the same year. Something like that… Something that strings them together in your head, and yet, otherwise could be different genres, different authors…

Every so often I'll get in the mood for a certain theme and read several books in a row. Some themes have been based on setting like Ireland, some on time periods like historicals or contemporaries, and some have been based on genre like westerns or suspense. I may be on a kick for pirates or cowboys. I've heard there are some Nascar themed novels out there - that might be my next theme.

Most of the books I read contain two elements: romance and suspense. The degrees may vary, but there has to be something that keeps me guessing and I like a little romance in there, too.

Sometimes a book will be so compelling, I can't put it down and it's completely out of the norm for me to read it. Usually the description is vivid or the characters have a story I have to know.

How about you? Do you get in the mood for a string of books that are related somehow?

I'd love to read your answers, so leave your link. You can find more Booking Through Thursday players by clicking the banner.

BTT and a chance to win a book

A group of us started a new blog for writers called A Writers' Rest. We're giving a book away on writing proposals, go check it out here.

I'm new to this meme, but how can I resist one about books? Here's this week's question: Are you a Footprint Leaver or a Preservationist?

For me, it depends on the book. If it's a study book with a place to write, I'll fill it up with writing. Occasionally, I'll pencil in a note on another book, but usually, I would rather use a notebook or journal (can never have too many of either). Recently, I began writing notes, thoughts, etc. in my Bible. What better place to leave a Footprint than there? I'd love for my children to read through and see my struggles and triumphs in the pages of my Bible. How cool would that be?

How about you?

Guest Blogger - Marlo Schalesky and Contest

I had the pleasure of reviewing Marlo Schalesky’s book ONLY THE WIND REMEMBERS a couple of years ago and fell in love with her rich descriptions and fascinating story. Today, Marlo shares her thoughts on good writing with us. Don’t forget to see how you can win one of her books at the end of her post.

The Essence of Good Writing
By Marlo Schalesky

Here I am, staring at the empty page, ready to start my newest novel. Of course, everything I write today seems like junk. And so I must ask the question of myself again – what is good writing anyway? What makes me say, “Wow, that was good!” when I finish reading a book?

Is it fine metaphors, a clever turn of phrase? Or perhaps it’s just the right verb used in just the right place? While I love metaphors and the right choice of words, these aren’t the things that make writing transcend the ordinary to become truly good writing.

Good writing, I have come to realize, is writing that gets out of the way and allows the reader to live the story, to experience the story from inside the characters’ point of view. Good writing transports the reader in someone else’s mind, heart, life. It’s all about seeing what someone else sees, feeling what they feel, living the story with the point of view character.

That’s why good writing lets the reader interact with the story in a way that’s natural, that’s true to real life. We don’t want to switch point of view from one character to another and back again in the middle of a scene because as people we don’t “head-hop” in our normal lives. We try to eliminate speaker attributes such as “he said/she said” because in normal life there are no “said’s” – instead we watch people as they speak. They fold their arms, or scratch their nose, or look away. That’s how we normally engage in conversation – reading body language as much as we hear words. And that, of course, is why good writing shows and doesn’t tell – because that’s how we operate in our everyday lives. Someone comes in the room and slams the door – we know they’re angry. They don’t announce they’re angry, they show us. It’s no different in good writing.

So, next time you want to write something good, remember that it isn’t about words and rules, it’s about helping the reader to live the story, to interact with your characters in the same way that they interact in their normal, everyday lives.

And when you get a chance, pick up my latest novel, Veil of Fire, and see which character you like to live in the most. The mother who lost her daughter in the greatest fire in Minnesota history? The farmer who saw his wife enveloped in flame? Or the mystery character, burned beyond recognition, hurt and hurting, living as a hermit in the hills? And maybe you’ll be able to guess, just by living in the hermit’s skin, who that person really is. Or maybe you’ll be as surprised as I was.

VEIL OF FIRE

Marlo, your newest book has me intrigued. I can’t wait to read it. Thank you for your terrific post. You’ve given us some good tips on making our writing better.

If you haven’t read any of Marlo’s books, I suggest you pick one up today and settle in for a great read.

There is also an interview and contest where you can have a chance at winning Marlo’s book over on Deborah M. Piccurelli’s website. Check it out and enter to win.

A'Muse' Me Monday 2

This week's A'Muse' Me Monday over on Four Fantabulous Females is rather tough for me. You'll have to read the post right before it to really see why I felt convicted.

Fact: Yesterday, I posted a quote from Stephen King’s On Writing. That quote is the inspiration for today’s Muse - What has God given you to do (which means you CAN do it) and are you doing it? Why or why not?

God has given me the gift of encouragement, discernment, writing, seeing in 'pictures', mothering, music and dance, dreaming - yet, I don't use these gifts as He would have me. In fact, it's safe to say I've never explored my potential to the fullest which means I'm not allowing God to fulfill those gifts through me. OUCH.

I think fear and apathy are my biggest obstacles, yet God is able to help me overcome if I allow Him. I wonder what God could do through me if I just let Him? It makes me excited to think about the possibilities.

I'm all yours God - let's go!

Re-launch Mishap...

It's probably a good thing I haven't built  my readership up yet as I totally missed my re-launch date. Life went nuts with a kitchen disaster, illness, yard sale planning and carrying out, and so many other life moments. I'm here now though and itching to be creative.

I'm working on my WIP called Midnight Ride - a romantic suspense. I have a new opening for a novel running through my head. I also have a painting idea which is weird considering I uh don't paint. That should be interesting.

When I was posting before, I had begun doing The Artist's Way. I'd like to do that again, but I'm not sure now is the time. There are also two other creative type books I want to do, too.

At the moment, I'm reading Pen on Fire. I've just begun, but already I've learned that it's possible to write when you only have fifteen minutes or so. All those snippets of time will add up. I just need to know what to work on when I actually put fingers to keyboard. Brainstorming can be done during the busy times when i can't sit uninterrupted.

Anyway, I'll be sharing whatever creative things I come up with or do here so stay tuned.

The Artist's Way and writing challenges

  • 100 words in 100 days 33/100
  • WIP: Midnight Ride Snowflaking it

On Monday, I'll be starting The Artist's Way again. I'm really looking forward to it. I had gotten through a few weeks and then Amber arrived and I've only now gotten to where I can give it attention again.  I have been doing the morning pages again for a while. It’s nice to have a place to ‘dump’ all the chaotic thoughts streaming through my head. Now to begin stirring the creative juices some more with Artist Dates and stuff. Anyone out there want to join me? Just leave a comment. I’ll actually be posting about my journey through The Artist’s Way on my creativity blog. I’ll post the blog when I actually begin.

As far as writing goes, Bob bought me my headphones and the kids are slowly learning to not disturb mom when she’s wearing them. For example, Christian (7) just tapped my shoulder and then noticed the headphones. He’s getting closer lol. Seriously though, it makes it easier to get into a writing zone and I especially love to type to the beat of the music. Okay, I know, I sound weird, but I also know that SOMEONE out there knows EXACTLY what I mean.

Writing has been going fairly well. I still need to focus more, but I’m definitely getting into the habit of writing daily. I’m also slowly increasing how much I write. Again, this will be much easier when I focus my efforts on specific writing assignments. I need to build in some market research time to each week, too.

I tend to procrastinate when I’m nervous about putting myself out there. Hmmm. Maybe I should challenge myself. I seem to be doing pretty good with those challenges. Maybe I can begin my rejection letter collection. Or maybe I can be more positive and do a query challenge. Or maybe I can find someone and we can challenge each other.

For now, I’m going to end this post and spend some time with my teething baby who wants nothing more than mama. Poor baby girl.

If anyone wants to join me as I go through The Artist’s Way, leave a comment. If you want to do some sort of a writing challenge, leave a comment. If you want to challenge me with a writing challenge without joining me, leave a comment – I just may take you up on it. If you feel sorry for my comment-less blog post, leave a comment. I know, shameless begging.
